Things to do in Sriracha
When we think of a holiday in Thailand the obvious places that we think of are Bangkok, Koh Samui or Phuket but there is a lesser known place in Chonburi province called Sirracha which is less than an hours drive from Pattaya and is well worth taking the time to visit. This relatively small city has everything that you are probably looking for without the commercialisation that we find in many of the major resorts. Below are just 8 suggestions about what you can do in and around the Sirracha area.
1. Ko Si Chang
The island is located about 12km off the coast of Sirracha and is a haven for locals and Bangkokonians looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. This island is more popular with the Thais rather than Western tourists but in many ways that is one of the attractions. The waters are clean and there is an abundance of superlative seafood restaurants and quiet coves where you can truly sit back and relax.
2. Sirracha Tiger Zoo
The Tiger Zoo has been open since 1997 and since that time it has welcomed over 10 million visitors. It is presently home to over 400 Royal Bengal Tigers and you can get the opportunity to feed them, have your photo taken with them as well as watching them play in a scenario that is close to their natural environment. Many of the Tigers have adopted mothers in the form of pigs so you can watch the tiger cubs feed from the sow along with her piglets. The Zoo has many other animals including elephants and camels. There are a number of excellent restaurants onsite so this really is a great day out.
3. Wat Koh Loi and Koh Loi Park
Wat Koh Loi is a temple that is situated on the small island of Koh Loi. This island that is approximately 3 rai in size is connected to the main land by a 500 metre long bridge. The island is a popular place for people to exercise and do a spot of fishing from the bridge. The stunning evening sunsets also attract many couples looking to enjoy some romance and the views. There are several restaurants on the island and the temple is also a popular venue for locals to offer prayers.
4. Burapha Golf Club
There are a number of fantastic golf courses in the region and picking out just one is extremely difficult.Burapha is 36 hole golf club and resort that offers stunning views back towards the wooded mountains close to Chonburi and out to sea looking across to Laem Chabang and Pattaya. The course is well maintained throughout the year and has quality, experienced caddies who can assist you around the course. After your round there is a bar and restaurant serving both Thai and Western dishes.
5. Khao Kheow Open Zoo
Khao Kheow Open Zoo is located just outside Sirracha and is truly a family experience. As the name suggests it is predominantly an open zoo. The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals including tigers, hyenas, rhinos, giraffes and elephants. The zoo offer differing tours such as day time and night time safaris when you will get the opportunity to see the animals roaming wild. Accommodation in the form of large tents is available for those looking to really “live” the whole experience. The zoo also has a zipline adventure as well has having a selection of restaurants offering a range of different foods from light snacks to full meals.
6. Shopping
Shopping may not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you are a shopaholic then Sirracha may be the place for you! There is the large Robinson’s Department Store along with an abundance of local shops and markets that are cheaper than Pattaya and Bangkok and perhaps offer something slightly different as they are certainly not designed to cater for tourists.
7. Wareepura Spa
What list could truly be complete without the mention of a spa? The Wareepura Spa is a popular choice with Asian visitors but everyone is of course welcome with particular emphasis being placed on families. The spa is located within a house and this creates a very natural and relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy your massage. Free tuk tuks are also available to the spa from anywhere within Sirracha.
8. Paramotor School Thailand
Located just outside of Sirracha the Paramotor School of Thailand is the perfect place to learn how to paramotor. A 7 or 8 day course will give you the opportunity to learn how to fly a paramotor. The team will teach you all the movements, the concept of flying, basic meteorology, safety and of course equipment maintenance. Initially you will be taught with tandem flights but as you progress you can then take up solo flying. This certainly is an experience that is well worth trying.
If you’re going to be spending some time in Sriracha then you’ll also be needing a hotel or somewhere to stay, find the best places here.
Once you’re finished in Sriracha, you may want to head North and check out Bangkok.
